Know Your Evacuation Level

Evacuation levels or zones are determined by where you live and what type of structure you live to inform you when you will need to evacuate. Sarasota County does not differentiate between voluntary and mandatory evacuations. When an evacuation notice is issued the county has assessed that there exists a risk to life and safety within the evacuation area, and is absolutely and unquestionably advising all residents within the noticed area to leave. When sustained winds exceed 45 mph, final safety measures are taken to protect public infrastructure and personnel. Emergences services (fire, EMS and law enforcement) will be suspended when it is no longer safe for them to remain on the road. Bridges and barrier islands may be closed to traffic.

• Residents need to know their evacuation level.

• During a hurricane or major flooding event, Sarasota County Emergency Management will announce what levels need to evacuate through AlertSarasota County, Instagram, X, and through local media including radio, print, and TV.

• All mobile homes, RVs, and boat dwellers must evacuate in the event of a storm regardless of the evacuation level being called or the category of hurricane.

• Homeowners should evaluate their own home’s safety even if outside of evacuation levels/areas.

*Residents may shelter at home if the home was built after 2002, is outside of the evacuation level being called, and/or has hurricane shutters, including window, and door coverings.
